The Stamp Collector

Collecting stamps goes back to the middle of the 19c when soon after the release of the “Penny Black” in 1840 people started to collect these strange pieces of paper on or off the envelope.  By 1860 the hobby started to become serious

and there were thousands worldwide involved.

The extent of the hobby covers those just interested in the stamps for their design to serious Philatelists who study them in detail.

Some popular areas of collecting include Airmail Stamps,  Postage Due Stamps, Definitive Stamps, Commemorative Stamps, Fiscal Stamps, as well as a whole plethora of printed stationery, not forgetting First Day Covers, Presentation packs and many more.

So it is obvious that there is a mass of material out there and most of us have to specialize to cope with it and there are more areas not mentioned here.

Bear in mind that there are those countries which produce stamps far in excess of their postal needs especially for the collector, many are lovely designs and should be treated a such.

There is wealth of information available, from the well known Catalogues (many can be found in your local library) to thousands of articles. The web is a good source of this material and worth spending time researching your particular area of interest.
